*Understanding Development - Evening Course*

The aim of the programme is to assist participants to enhance their understanding of the nature, problems and possibilities of development in developing countries. It is intended for anyone involved or concerned with development issues for reasons of work, active support or personal interest. Neither previous experience nor training in development work are required. Course content includes: Theories of Development; Debt, Trade and Development; Measuring Development; Aid; Emergency Relief Interventions; Environment and Sustainable Development; Human Rights and Development; Food and Livelihoods Security; Refugees and Migration; Gender and Development; Community Development in Ireland; case studies of development in practice.

The *objectives* of the course are:

  1. To provide /detailed information/ on international development
     topics;
  2. To introduce and explain /alternative theories and approaches/ to
     development;
  3. To encourage a /critical and analytical approach/ to development
     issues;
  4. To relate development issues to /participants' own work and life
     experience/;
  5. To /deepen interest/ in and commitment to Majority World issues.

This course runs for 20 weeks, beginning 4th October 2010 on Monday nights.
